Baba Mandir, Gangtok

Baba Mandir

Baba Mandir is located around 60 KM away which is 4000 meters (13000+ ft) above sea level. Harbhajan Singh was an Indian Army solder. Who born in Sikh family in 1941 in village of Batthe Bhaini (Punjab). He joined Indian Army in 1956 and posted to Rajput regiment.

According to legend while escorting a column of mules to a remote outpost, Major Harbhajan Singh drowned in a glacier in 1968. Then manhunt was launched to search Baba. He was found after 3 days and cremated with military honour.

Later on Baba, through a dream, instructed to one of his colleagues to build and maintain a shrine after him, in his Bunker. Legend says that in the event of a war between India and China, Baba would warn the Indian Soldiers three days in advance. Indian as well as Chinese army officials pay the respect to Baba Harbhajan Singh. Still yearly Baba gets yearly leave like other Army person and for his journey Army books one reserved railway ticket. One of the Army Officer accompany the Baba, journey to his native, small amount is also paid to his mother. Further this legend says that even while patrolling if any Army Jawan is sleeping, Baba will awake him (by slapping) and if any one family member is not felling well, keep a water bottle in bunker and bring back to home and drink it regularly, disease will be cured.

At this much height our Indian Army serves to all visitors free of cost. There we had a glass of tea prepared by our one of the Army Jawan, that taste was superb, even we didn't found that taste through-out Gangtok city. Here you will find Yaks, during snow-fall local peoples will conduct Yak-safari for tourist.
